Orchid Show

So, yesterday I drove out to the Michigan Orchid Show. I love orchids. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I'm trying! They used to hold the show at the mall where I work, which was good, yet bad. Awesome, b/c I got to spend the weekend staring at oodles of beautiful flowers. Bad, b/c I spent lots of money on them. I only bought 2 orchids yesterday! Amazing, I know! Only two! (well, and some potting material and fertilizer). One of them isn't in bloom yet, but I can't wait until it is. The flowers are tiny and have a lemon-scent! They're buds on it, so in a couple of weeks..... The second is a gorgeous phalaenopsis with several stems full of blooms. This trip also served as a great opportunity for me to bust out my new camera. That's right, I finally broke down and bought my new camera body. And now I'm really, really broke. (thank goodness for employee discounts! There are small perks for being a retail slave).

So, here are some pictures from the show. Enjoy. Sorry, I don't know the names of all the orchids. Sometimes when I go to the shows, I'm smart and I do things like photograph the tag so I know what flower it is later. Oops. They're still pretty. I'll be smarter at the Ann Arbor Orchid Show coming up in April.

These are in the Paphiopedilum family. They are more commonly known as slipper orchids.

Cute tiny, tiny little flowers. Each flower is less than an inch tall.

This is one where I really really wish I photographed the tag. It's so alien!

These are a cattleya-hybrid.

More tiny orchids. They small delicate flowers fascinate me. Each of these flowers was close to a half-inch in size.

Phalaenopsis orchids. Also known as moth orchids. These are the most common and what you see in greenhouses (and sometimes grocery stores).

And finally, my orchid! This is the phal. with all the blooms (alot of still buds). When my little one blooms, I'll get pics of that too.
